Transferring university credits internationally

To move credits between universities in different countries, the receiving school needs to trust your record — which usually means an official transcript plus detailed course descriptions, and often an apostille on the transcript. Some universities accept a credential evaluation instead, so confirm the method before you authenticate anything.

Credit transfer is a different problem from graduating or getting a visa: the receiving university is deciding how much of your completed coursework counts. That review leans on your official transcript, the course descriptions or syllabi behind each credit, and an explanation of the grading scale — and where the destination is a Hague country, the transcript is frequently required to be apostilled.

The wrinkle is that many universities now accept alternatives to a traditional apostille — a WES evaluation, or CIMEA for Italy, or a secure digital-verification platform. If your target school takes one of those, authenticating the paper transcript may be unnecessary; if it does not, the apostille is the right route. This genuinely varies school to school, so the admissions office is the authority, not us.

When an apostille is needed, we authenticate the Ontario-issued transcript in person, and can arrange certified translation of the transcript and course descriptions for a non-English destination. The one thing to get right first is the format your registrar releases — a sealed paper transcript authenticates cleanly; a portal PDF may need to be notarized as a true copy first.

Before you order — confirm your specifics

Whether a transcript needs an apostille, a WES/CIMEA evaluation, or a digital verification is decided by the receiving university and varies widely. Confirm the accepted method with their admissions office before authenticating, so you don’t pay for a step they won’t use.
