In short

How do you apostille a Canadian document?

Since 11 January 2024, Canada issues apostilles under the Hague Convention. A Canadian document is apostilled by its province's competent authority — Ontario documents by Official Document Services (ODS) in Toronto — or by Global Affairs Canada for every other province, territory, and federal document. If you live in the United States, you mail the Canadian original to a filing agent who submits it for you.

What changed in 2024

Canada joined the Apostille Convention

For decades, a Canadian document headed abroad needed two steps: authentication by Global Affairs Canada, then legalization by the destination country's embassy or consulate. It was slow, and every country did it differently.

That ended on 11 January 2024, when the Hague Apostille Convention entered into force for Canada. Now a single certificate — the apostille — is attached to your document and accepted in every one of the 128+ member countries, with no embassy step. The same change means a document apostilled in another member country, including the United States, is now accepted in Canada without further legalization.

Competent authorities

Who issues your Canadian apostille?

The right authority depends on where your document was issued. Five provinces run their own apostille service; everything else goes through Global Affairs Canada.

We file Ontario-issued documents. For a document issued in another province, we'll point you to the right authority — just ask.

From the United States

Searching from the US? Start here

The path depends on which country issued your document — this is the single most common mix-up, so here is the honest answer for both.

You have a Canadian document

Born in Canada, earned a Canadian degree, or need an RCMP check or Canadian corporate papers authenticated? That is our job. Mail or courier the Ontario original to us and we file it in person at ODS, then courier it back to your US address with tracking.

Start a mail-in order

You have a US document for use in Canada

A US-issued document is apostilled by the US competent authority — the Secretary of State for the issuing state, or the US Department of State for federal documents. We cannot apostille US documents. The good news: since January 2024 Canada accepts apostilles, so a US apostille is now recognized here with no embassy step.

Not a service we provide — shared so you head to the right place.

Canadian documents we apostille

Which Canadian documents can be apostilled?

If a Canadian authority issued it and it carries a real signature or seal, it can almost certainly be apostilled. These are the ones we handle every week.

How a mail-in order works

  1. 1

Mail or courier your original to us

From anywhere in the US or Canada. Send the registrar-issued original, not a scan — apostilles verify a real signature and seal.

  2. 2

We review and notarize if required

Some documents must be notarized by an Ontario notary before ODS will authenticate them. We check every document first so nothing bounces at the counter.

  3. 3

Filed in person at ODS Toronto

We hand-deliver Ontario documents to the ODS counter instead of mailing them in, which is what makes same-day possible.

  4. 4

Returned by courier to your US address

Your apostilled document is couriered back with tracking. One apostille is then accepted in every Hague Convention country.

All-in cost

Same-day service is $300 for the first Ontario document, dropping to $50 for the second and as low as $40 each for larger batches — the ODS government fee is already included. Mail-in and courier return are quoted with your order.

Confirm your specifics before you mail

Requirements vary by document age, province of issue, and the country you'll use it in — and some documents must be notarized first. Text a photo to 416 676 8334 and we'll confirm the exact path and price before anything ships.

Apostille Canada FAQ

Common questions about Canadian apostilles

Does Canada issue apostilles now?
Yes. The Hague Apostille Convention entered into force for Canada on 11 January 2024. Before that date Canada used authentication and consular legalization; now a single apostille certificate replaces that process for use in any Hague Convention member country.
Who issues an apostille in Canada?
It depends on where the document was issued. Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Québec and Saskatchewan each have their own designated competent authority. Documents from every other province or territory, and federal documents, are apostilled by Global Affairs Canada. Ontario documents are handled by Official Document Services (ODS) in Toronto.
I live in the United States and need my Canadian document apostilled. What do I do?
You send the Canadian original to a filing agent in the province that issued it. For Ontario documents you can mail or courier the original to us; we review it, notarize it if required, file it in person at ODS in Toronto, and courier it back to your US address with tracking.
I have a US document that I need to use in Canada. Can you apostille it?
No — a US-issued document is apostilled by the US competent authority, which is the Secretary of State for the state that issued it (or the US Department of State for federal documents). Since 11 January 2024 Canada accepts apostilles, so a US apostille is now recognized in Canada without any further consular legalization.
How much does a Canadian apostille cost through you?
Same-day service on an Ontario document is $300 for the first document, with additional documents filed at the same time at $50 for the second, $45 each for documents 3-5, and $40 each from the sixth onward. The ODS government fee is already included. Mail-in and courier return are quoted with your order.
How long does a Canadian apostille take?
An Ontario document filed in person can often be apostilled the same business day. A standard mail-in request to ODS takes roughly 15 business days, and Global Affairs Canada processing times vary by document and volume — always confirm the current estimate before you rely on a deadline.

The 2024 change and the list of competent authorities come from the authorities themselves. Rules and processing times change, so confirm the current requirement with the authority handling your file before you order.
