Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis): apostilles for the whole chain

The Consulate General of Italy in Toronto requires every Canadian vital record in your ancestral line — birth, marriage and death certificates — to be apostilled and translated into Italian. Because the chain must be unbroken, a single un-apostilled certificate can stall the entire application.

Italian citizenship by descent is the single largest reason people in the GTA need apostilles, and it is also the most document-heavy. The consulate reconstructs your bloodline from the Italian-born ancestor down to you, and every Canadian-issued certificate in that chain — each birth, each marriage, each death — has to be authenticated and accompanied by an Italian translation. Miss one and the line is considered broken.

Read the eligibility rules before you spend a dollar on documents. Italy’s Decree-Law 36/2025, converted into Law 74/2025, sharply narrowed descent-based eligibility: broadly, applications not already filed by 27 March 2025 now generally require a parent or grandparent who was born in Italy or held only Italian citizenship, among other conditions. This is a legal question, not a document question — confirm your eligibility with the consulate or an Italian citizenship lawyer first.

On the documents themselves, the Toronto consulate expects certified long-form vital records, apostilled by the province that issued them, then translated. Where an ancestor naturalized as Canadian, proof of the date of naturalization (or a "Search of Citizenship Records" from IRCC) is used to show they were still Italian when the next person in the line was born. We authenticate the Ontario-issued records and coordinate translation; records from other provinces are apostilled by that province.

All-in cost

Ontario records are $170 for the first and $50 for each additional filed together, so a chain of six Ontario certificates is roughly $420 before translation. Most chains also include out-of-province records (apostilled by that province) and Italian translation — we’ll build one combined quote.

Before you order — confirm your specifics

Eligibility under the 2025 reform is a legal determination, and the Toronto consulate’s document checklist and booking process change regularly. We handle authentication and translation, not eligibility opinions — confirm you qualify and get the current checklist from the consulate or a citizenship lawyer before ordering documents.
